Benefits of the e-prescription with e-card for public and private prescriptions
No paper required: Prescriptions can be redeemed at the pharmacy simply using the e-card, the e-prescription code or the e-prescription ID (REZ-ID).
Clear overview: All outstanding public health insurance prescriptions can be viewed in the apps and on the websites of BVAEB, ÖGK, SVS and MeineSV. All apps and information: Chipkarte.at!
Up-to-date information: Daily calculation of prescription fees paid means that an exemption takes effect just one day after the prescription fee cap has been exceeded.
Security: Paper printouts can be lost, become illegible or be read by unauthorized people—the e-prescription offers greater security and reliability.
How you can use the e-prescription
The e-prescription is replacing the previous paper prescription in doctors’ offices and pharmacies. This means that doctors prescribe medication and save it to their patients’ e-card system as an e-prescription. If requested, patients can also receive a printout of the prescription on an A4 sheet. The top right corner contains a QR code with the prescription ID and the E-Med ID. Prescribed medication can be collected from any pharmacy in Austria.
Patients can also use the relevant app or website of their health insurance provider to access the e-prescription using a mobile phone signature or ID Austria, and view the prescribed medicines.
You now have several options for redeeming the e-prescription at the pharmacy:
1. Insert your e-card
2. Scan the QR code on the paper prescription
3. Enter the prescription ID manually
Do I have to request my regular medication from my doctor each time, or is it always stored on the e-card?
Yes, you have to request your regular medication from your doctor each time. This is also for your safety and allows the doctor to check whether the prescribed medicines are still suitable for you.
How long is my e-prescription valid?
An e-prescription is valid for one month from the date it is issued. This means you can redeem your e-prescription at any pharmacy within one month.
PLEASE NOTE:
Even if you are just one day late, the e-prescription is invalid and will no longer be accepted by the system. At that point, it will also no longer be visible to the pharmacy in the e-card system. You will then have to visit your doctor again to obtain a new prescription.
How can I get my medication if I am unable to leave the house?
In this case, you can give your e-card or a printout of your e-prescription to someone you trust, or forward the QR code from your phone.
Does the e-prescription also work if you have opted out of ELGA?
Yes. ELGA and the e-prescription are two different systems. You cannot opt out of the e-prescription, and it also works if you have already opted out of ELGA.
