Orthomolecular Medicine
Stay healthy – thanks to the right (orthomolecular) particles!
The “really good particles” are vitamins, minerals and trace elements—in other words, tiny molecules/particles that our bodies need to function well and stay healthy.
Our bodies produce many of these vitamins and minerals themselves; we metabolize some, and obtain many through food. And this is where many people reach their (nutrient) limits. Our “food” no longer contains what it promises. 70 percent of the food we eat today is industrially processed, refined and cooked, and contains countless additives and preservatives, but hardly any vitamins, minerals and/or trace elements.
We are therefore faced with an excess of caloric food energy and, at the same time, an inadequate supply of non-caloric micronutrients. This contributes significantly to the “common diseases” of our time. We are, so to speak, “starving” in the midst of plenty.
How does orthomolecular medicine work?
The therapy was founded by the American Linus Pauling, who recognized that people become ill when they lack the good molecules.
Orthomolecular medicine uses vitamins, trace elements, minerals, essential fatty acids, essential amino acids and secondary plant compounds—substances naturally found in the body—to keep people healthy. It is also used alongside conventional medical treatments. Questions about causal relationships (which imbalances in nutrient levels lead to which symptoms) always form the basis for its use.
Who needs dietary supplements?
Our environmental and dietary conditions have changed considerably over the past decades. Instead of pure air, clean drinking water and an intact natural environment, we are confronted every day with thousands of different environmental toxins. In addition to the worthless foods already mentioned, most people are therefore not particularly well supplied with nutrients.
Dietary supplements ≠ dietary supplements
The name says it all: dietary supplements are meant to supplement food. This means they should provide what should actually be present in a healthy body. No plant, vegetable or meat contains just a single vitamin or mineral; rather, nature provides us with a wide variety of nutrient complexes. Many orthomolecular substances in our bodies also depend on the presence of “partners.” A good dietary supplement therefore always combines several nutrients, thereby enhancing their effects.
