Circulation: Not working!

Heat, lack of fluids, low blood pressure – all of these and many other things can cause circulatory problems.

Circulatory problems are usually caused by a sudden drop in blood pressure. As a result, the brain is temporarily not supplied with enough oxygen. This can cause dizziness, blurred vision, weakness, and even brief fainting. There are many triggers for circulatory problems – from harmless things like a lack of fluids, standing for a long time or getting up quickly, to serious conditions such as heart failure.

High temperatures are another cause of circulatory problems. Here we have summarized how you can generally strengthen your circulation and what you can do if you are experiencing acute problems.

IN ADVANCE

Exercise and sports

Regular endurance training, such as brisk walking, hiking, cycling or swimming. Ideally, two to three times a week for 30 to 60 minutes each time.

Contrast showers

Always finish your shower with cold water on your arms and legs. This optimally trains the blood vessel walls to widen or contract more quickly when temperatures change.

Always drink enough fluids

Drink between 1.5 and 2 liters of water every day

Eat a balanced diet

Eat plenty of fruit and vegetables, as well as enough salt. A diet rich in salt raises blood pressure. However, too much salt is also unhealthy.

IN CASE OF ACUTE PROBLEMS

Special exercises

Move your arms and legs before getting up. Stretch, rotate your ankles, and make cycling movements. Tense your calves, thighs and buttocks firmly for a few seconds, then relax. This gets your circulation going while you are still lying down. Get up slowly. Let your legs dangle over the edge of the bed for a little while before getting up, and rock your heels on the floor; this pumps the blood from your legs back to your heart.

No alcohol

Avoid alcohol. Alcohol dilates the blood vessels and puts additional strain on your circulation.

Caffeine boost

A cup of coffee can give your circulation a short-term boost.

No physical activity in hot weather!

Avoid physical exertion in extreme heat. Stay out of the sun and wear loose, breathable clothing.

If your circulatory problems suddenly become severe, persist for a long time, or are accompanied by chest pain, shortness of breath, cramps or loss of consciousness, seek medical attention immediately for a more thorough evaluation.
